
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - 18 October in 2000) was an American actress and singer whose career spanned more than 40 years. A torch-singer renowned for her smooth, sultry contralto singing, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 between the years 1955 and 1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her rendition of "Cry me a river" which she had included on her debut album. London was nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award as a actor for her role in Emergency! of Dixie McCall. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her acting career. London's 35-year acting career began in the film industry in 1944 and included roles as the female lead in many westerns, co-starring with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958), together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the start of her professional career as a musician. In 1969, she released her last studio album. But she was prominent in the emergency show in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979), where she co-starred with Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband who produced the show.
